1.1 Tahitian Pearls Cultivation History
Tahitian pearl is the regional specialty of Salt Lake in French Polynesia. In the late 1700s, the Europeans built relationships with Polynesians, hence leading to the discovery of black pearls which is called Tahitian pearls nowadays. These pearls were preferred by the roylty. People at that times began to kill oysters to get black pearls. Owing to the heavy fishing, the black pearls were on the edge of extinction. In the light of this phenomenon, people thought of new way to culture oysters for pearls. From then on, cultural technique of black pearls had been extensively expanding among the world.
1.2 Tahitian Pearls Today
The Tahitian pearls are cultivated from a kind of shell called Pinctada margarilifera whose diameter is above one meter, thereby producing large-size pearls. This kind of oysters are rather delicate and fragile and easily to be dead, which makes the cost of Tahitian pearls high. It is no wonder that why the Tahitian pearls are so expensive around the world.
